During the winter months on Vancouver Island, we can expect frost throughout the winter. Adding mulch can protect your plant from the damage caused by repeated frost. Frost damage is particularly problematic to younger plants or plants whose growing conditions are not ideal (such as shady areas).
You can rebuild your soil health throughout the winter. While plants do not use as much of the nutrients in the soil during the winter, adding mulch can help replenish it! Having nutrient rich soil will help your plants flourish during the summer months!
With the wet winter's we experience, a common issue is root rot. Mulch allows some water to be retained while the excess runs off or drains more effectively than hardened soil or clay.
Even when your garden isn't growing, weeds can be. Often, weeds are hardier plants that are capable of producing even during wet and cold seasons. Mulch will help protect your plants from being choked or starved by weeds throughout the winter! It might even save you time during your spring clean-up!
